Soup Kitchen
Our Parish Soup Kitchen serves 160 men and women each Monday through Friday. We serve a Continental Breakfast and a hot full lunch.
We are always in need of canned vegetables and fruits, Spaghetti and marinara sauce, powdered iced tea, sugar and coffee. During holiday times we put specific needs in the bulletin. Monetary gifts are always welcome!
Our Kitchen began in the 1980’s, when former Pastor, Bishop Austin B. Vaughan, saw the need for many area adults to have a hot balanced meal. At that time people were coming to the back door of the Rectory asking for food. When handed a box of spaghetti and a jar of sauce, most people handed it back saying that they had no place to cook it. They were either homeless or living in a hotel room or in a single room of a building, with no kitchens available. Bishop Vaughan brought on Sister Rose Lawrence Kenney to get the Kitchen “up and running”. Jean White was brought on board to run the Kitchen on a daily basis. Jean continued to serve the needs of our daily guests until 1997, when she stepped down due to health issues. Vickie McKoy was hired in September of 1997 and continues to run our Soup Kitchen today.
